Orangeburg Native to Serve as 2018 SCSU Homecoming Parade Marshal

ORANGEBURG, SC – Orangeburg native Thurman D. Shuler, a retired educator, will serve as the marshal for the South Carolina State 2018 Homecoming parade, which gets underway at 9:45 a.m. Saturday


Shuler attended Riverside Elementary School, Dunton Memorial Elementary School, and graduated from Wilkinson High School (now Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School), all in Orangeburg.


He earned an undergraduate degree from SC State College (now university) in 1957 and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Artillery Branch of the United States Army. Following his military duty, which included stops at Fort Bliss, Texas; Karlsruhe, Germany; and Dreux, France, he returned to SC State and earned a Master of Education in 1965 He did further study in the University of South Carolina’s doctoral program in British literature.


Shuler has been a longtime avid and loyal supporter of SCSU and was inducted into The Thomas E. Miller Society on March 2, 2018. The Miller Society is the university’s highest giving society, which recognizes cumulative philanthropy from individuals and couples who have given at least $100,000 to the university. He is an active member of the Orangeburg County Alumni Chapter and is a life member of the SCSU National Alumni Association.


Shuler taught for thirty-one years in South Carolina public schools, where he also served as a high school band and choir director.


A lifelong musician, he served for forty-seven years as minister of music for Mount Calvary Baptist Church, where he has been a member for seventy-two years. He also shared his musical talents as a volunteer musician at other area churches and organizations.
