SC State’s Kemp to Compete at 2019 NCAA Track and Field Championship

Austin, Texas – SC State sprinter, Demek Kemp, will be among the hundreds of student-athletes competing at the 2019 NCAA Div. I Outdoor Track and Field Championship on June 5-8, at the University of Texas’s Mike A. Meyers Stadium.

Brig. Gen. Twanda YoungThe SC State record holder in the 100 meters with a time of 10.03, Kemp will see his first action on Wednesday at 7:46 p.m. (CDT) in the 100-meter semifinals. Friday’s final is scheduled for 8:22 p.m. CDT.

National live coverage of selected championship events can be seen on ESPN2 Wednesday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. EST; Thursday, ESPNU, 8 p.m. EST, and ESPN2, 9 p.m. EST; Friday, ESPN, 8:30 p.m. EST; and Saturday, ESPN2, 6:30 p.m. EST. All events will be shown on ESPN3.

Kemp, a Monroe, Georgia senior, qualified for the prestigious event with a fifth-place overall finish in the 100 meters in a time of 10.14 at the recent NCAA Div. I East Preliminary Round at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville. He earlier earned the silver medal at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championship with a second-place finish in a 10.15 clocking at Greensboro, North Carolina.

Kemp is competing at the NCAA Outdoor Championship for the first time and is the second SC State competitor in as many years under Bulldog head track coach Tim Langford to qualify for the event. His teammate, Tyrell Richard, recorded a fifth-place finish and earned All-America honors last season at Eugene, Oregon, ending a 14-year Bulldog drought at the prestigious championship.

Kemp, however, is no stranger to national competition as he was the bronze medalist in the 60 meters (6.55) at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Championship and won the 60 meters earlier this year at the Xfinity USA Track and Indoor Field Championship at Staten Island, New York (6.55).
