Automotive Entrepreneur to Share His Pathway to Success

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – On Wednesday, Oct. 2, the School of Business’s Executive Speaker Series will feature Thomas J. Johnson, president, chief executive officer and owner of F & J Associates, which is a company that owns and operates automobile dealerships in the southeastern U.S. and U.S. Virgin Islands. The program will be held at noon in the Belcher Hall fourth-floor auditorium. Johnson will share his experience of building a successful career.

Johnson serves on the board of directors of South State Bank. He is also a member of the South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association and is its first vice president. The South Carolina Automobile Dealers Association represents new car and truck franchised dealers across the state of South Carolina and advocates on behalf of its members in public policy, regulatory issues and economic developments impacting the automotive industry.

Additionally, he serves on the board of visitors of Coastal Carolina University’s School of Business and the South Carolina Business Resources board. He is a member of the National Automobile Dealers Association and the Ford Lincoln Mercury Dealers Association.

Johnson is a former U.S. Air Force pilot and has been an auto dealer since 1985. He was the first African American appointed to head a Nissan dealership in 1998 after the company announced an initiative to increase minority representation among its dealers by 25 percent. He recently acquired the Nissan dealership in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Active in community service, he is a member of the South Carolina Minority Business Network and is a former member of the board of trustees at Shaw University and the Chamber of Commerce of Conway, South Carolina and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Johnson received an Honorary Doctorate degree from the Shaw University School of Divinity.
