South State Corporation CEO and Chairman to Speak with Business Students

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Robert R. Hill Jr., South State Corporation’s president and chief executive officer, and Robert R. Horger, chairman of the board, will speak to students during the Executive Speaker Series on Wednesday, Nov. 13 at noon in the Belcher Hall fourth-floor auditorium.

Pough12Hill joined South State in 1995 as president of its subsidiary bank and was named chief executive officer of the corporation in 2004. South State Corporation, a bank holding company with $15 billion in assets, serves 700,000 customers in the Carolinas, Georgia and Virginia. South State Bank has been one of the best-performing banks in the country, with a total shareholder return of approximately 1400% since 1995.

In recent years, South State has been ranked in the top one-third of Forbes’ 100 Best Banks in America (2019), named one of Forbes Best-in-State Banks (2018), overall winner of Bank Director’s “Ranking Banking” Study, chosen as one of the “Best Places to Work in SC” (2017-2019) and named to the Women’s Choice Award Best Companies for Women (2019).

Hill has held leadership positions as a board member in numerous organizations and currently serves on the board of directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, where he has served as audit chair.

Prior to that, he served in the Charlotte branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond board of directors, on the board of directors of the University of South Carolina Development Foundation and is a past chairman of the board of the South Carolina Banker’s Association.

Hill earned his undergraduate degree from The Citadel and earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business.

He has been honored with several awards, including The Citadel School of Business Alvah H. Chapman Jr. Distinguished Leadership Award, and was named Distinguished Citadel Alumnus. He was also recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by the University of South Carolina Moore School of Business and the UofSC Alumni Association.

The Columbia, South Carolina native and his wife, Carol, have two adult children.

Robert R. Horger, chairman of the board of South State Corporation and partner with Orangeburg firm Horger, Barnwell & Reid LLP, has practiced law with the firm since 1975. With 42 years of experience in the legal profession, Horger has practiced in the fields of litigation, commercial real estate, business law and healthcare law.

Pough12Presently, Horger serves as general counsel of the Regional Medical Center of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties. For a period of 14 years, he served as the Orangeburg County Attorney.

Serving on the board of South State Corporation since 1991, Horger served as vice chairman from 1994 through 1998 and has served as chairman since 1998. During his tenure as chairman, the company grew from $545 million in assets to over $10 billion in assets with offices located in North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.

Horger, a graduate of Wofford College and the University of South Carolina School of Law, was appointed by former Governor Nikki Haley to serve on the board of the Governor’s School for Arts and Humanities.

Additionally, he is a member of several professional associations and has been active in civil affairs, including service on various charitable boards.
