Orangeburg, S.C. – SC State University 1890 Research & Extension video programming now airs in homes of families living in South Carolina’s Low Country region. “@home with SC State 1890” broadcasts to residents in nine counties on the local cable access station, PRTC Channel 57. The educational video series airs Monday through Friday at 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Channel 57 in the PRTC region, which includes parts of Colleton, Charleston, Dorchester, Beaufort, Jasper, Hampton, Allendale, Barnwell and Bamberg counties. The video series premiered on the station October 1.

The instructional videos focus on a variety of topics, such as proper handwashing techniques, how to safely grocery shop during the coronavirus, ways to remain physically active at home and quick tips on preparing healthy meals and snacks.

“SC State University 1890 Research & Extension is pleased to partner with PRTC Channel 57 to bring into the homes of South Carolinians research-based information every day that is accurate and relevant in helping families to make informed decisions pertaining to areas that impact the overall well-being of families,” said Vice President and Executive Director of 1890 Programs Dr. Louis Whitesides.

“The collaboration reflects SC State 1890’s commitment to expanding its footprint in providing programs, services and activities that improve quality of life and elevate the standard of living,” Whitesides added.

Likewise, the partnership helps PRTC carry out its mission of serving the community by offering local programming to its video subscribers. PRTC is a telecommunications company which provides internet, video, voice , wireless and security and home automation.

“@home with SC State 1890” began as online programming produced in response to COVID-19. As fears mounted and the number of confirmed cases and reports of fatalities throughout the state increased, high-touch 1890 services and programs were suspended to reduce any potential exposure to staff and Extension clientele. “@home” allowed SC State 1890 to continue offering activities and programs to its constituents statewide and subsequently broaden its reach to individuals and families in other states.

“Through this partnership, we are witnessing the power – and versatility – of virtual programming,” said Ishmel Washington, director of the 1890 Extension Low Country region. “Its adaptability from being online to now airing in homes throughout our service communities is invaluable. We appreciate PRTC recognizing the impactful contributions we can make together in the Low Country.”

“@home with SC State 1890” is produced monthly and released via the SC State University 1890 Research & Extension YouTube Channel: scstate1890. For more information on all 1890 Research & Extension programs and services, visit www.scsu.edu/1890.aspx.
