SC State’s Board of Trustees appoints Judge Merl Code Acting President

Merle CodeSC State University’s Board of Trustees appointed Judge Merl Code Acting President of SC State University, effective immediately.

Judge Merl F. Code is an attorney at Law of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. Mr. Code has been an active board member of over 30 organizations serving the interest of the Upstate, such as; Palmetto Institute, Minority Economic Development Institute, BB&T Bank of South Carolina, President of Clemson Advisory Board, and Greater Greenville YMCA to name a few. In addition to serving as a board member Mr. Code has also served in the capacity as Chairman in several of these organizations, including but not limited to; Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Phillis Wheatley Association, University Center of Greenville and United Way of Greenville. Mr. Code’s list of successful endeavors includes Owner/CEO of Precision Tool Manufacturing, Owner/Chairman of Code Insurance Associates and President of Code & Associates Sports Management Agency.

Mr. Code is a 1970 graduate of North Carolina A&T with a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics. Mr. Code received numerous athletic awards while attending North Carolina A&T and upon graduation enjoyed an 8 year career in professional football. Mr. Code enrolled in University of South Carolina School of Law and earned his Juris Doctorate in 1979, when injury slowed his football career.

In addition to the impressive list of Mr. Code’s accomplishments already listed, he is also the holder of many ‘first’ titles; such as first African American to chair the Greenville County United Way board of directors, the first African American Municipal Court judge and the first African American to become chairman of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Code isn't just an African American leader, he is a community leader. Mr. Code is unbounded by others perceptions of the roles African Americans can and should play. Code's leadership knows no bounds and has set the bar high for African American leadership in Greenville.

Mr. Code and his wife Denise have 2 children.
