Welcome to the South Carolina State University Social Work Program. The program began in 1970 following a study which found that over 80% of students majoring in psychology and sociology were interested in the field of social work. In tandem with this discovery and support from the Kellogg Foundation, sociology professor Marguerite Howie completed training in undergraduate social work education and began the Social Work Program. In 1972, additional faculty were hired to further develop the program.
The mission of the program is to educate and prepare competent, ethical and effective generalist practitioners for entry level practice with individuals, families, small groups, communities and organization. As the world and its citizens continue to evolve and diversify, so must our profession. The Social Work Program continually provides students with opportunities to learn and practice skills to effect change within their communities and the world. We invite you to peruse our website and learn more about our program, students and faculty.

History & Overview
The South Carolina State University Social Work Bachelors of Social Work Program began in 1970 following a study which found that over 80% of students majoring in psychology and sociology were interested in the field of social work. In tandem with this discovery and support from the Kellogg Foundation, sociology professor Marguerite Howie completed training in undergraduate social work education and began the Social Work Program. In 1972, additional faculty was hired to further develop the program.
The mission of the program is to educate and prepare competent, ethical and effective generalist practitioners for entry level practice with individuals, families, small groups, communities and organization. This mission is consistent with the Educational and Policy Standards adopted by the Council on Social Work Education in April 2008 for baccalaureate-level social work program. The program is compatible with the primary purpose of the social work profession to promote human and community well-being through its continuous focus on community service, outreach, the promotion of human rights, social and economic justice for all people with emphasis on populations at risk.
