Freshmen Admissions Requirements

At SC State University, we make applying to college simple. Below is more information about SC State University admissions and the services we offer to help you complete your application, understand the process, and make a successful transition to the University. All students are encouraged to apply for admission to SC State University.  Because student success depends in large part upon readiness, the university reserves admissions to those students who can demonstrate adequate preparation for higher education either through appropriate GPA or through previous success at another postsecondary institution.

How to apply as a Freshman

  • Create an account and complete the online application
  • Submit your official high school transcript
  • Submit your official SAT or ACT scores (test optional)
  • Recommendations are accepted, but not required
  • SC State University accepts Advanced Placement (AP) (PDF), International Baccalaureate (IB) (PDF) and Dual Enrollment credit. Please note that an official score report for AP or IB credit or a transcript from the college awarding dual enrollment credit must be submitted for credit.
  • Official GED scores from testing center and GED Certificate (if applicable)

Freshman applicants will be evaluated on

  • High school course prerequisites (PDF)
  • High school grade point average
  • SAT and/or ACT test scores (test optional; required for SC State University academic scholarships)
  • GED scores (if applicable)

Freshman applicants will be evaluated on an individual basis on the above criteria. This criterion is used to determine the applicant’s probability of success during their freshmen year.

When will I receive a decision?

Applications are reviewed and decisions are made on a rolling basis. Students typically receive information about their admission status approximately two to three weeks after all materials are received in the Office of Admissions (application, fee, transcripts, and optional test score).

How do I reserve my space at SC State University?

SCSU will email an online commit form to students after they have been accepted. Students must complete the form or email admissions@scsu.edu  by May 1. All accepted students who are confirmed and registered for housing by May 1 are guaranteed housing.

How do I appeal my admissions decision?

All new students can appeal their admissions decisions to the Vice President for Enrollment Management, Dr. Manicia Finch.  Students can contact her at mfinch@scsu.edu or (803) 378-9235.

Transfer Admissions Requirements

The Office of Transfer Services (OTS) seeks to educate, engage, and establish excellence by providing transfer students the resources they need to become productive members of the SCSU community.

At SC State University, an applicant is considered a transfer student if he or she has attended another post-secondary institution in any capacity after completion of high school, regardless of whether or not the student earned credit at that institution. The majority of our transfer students come from the community or technical colleges.

Transfer Admissions Requirements

Students who have earned 12 semester hours or more of college-level work (post high school graduation):

  • 2.0 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the last college attended.
  • Earned at least 12 semester hours at the last college attended; if not, all transcripts from previous institutions will be reviewed
  • Official college transcripts sent directly from each institution attended
  • Eligible to return to all previous institutions

Students who have earned fewer than 12 semester hours of college-level work (post high school graduation) and are under 21 years of age must also meet freshman admissions requirements.

Credits from SC Technical Colleges

Attending a South Carolina technical college and want to join Bulldog Nation? We have provided resources for learning how your course credits may transfer to South Carolina State University. Please review the information with your technical college advisor if you have questions.

*Effective June 1, 2022, students who graduate with an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from a state of South Carolina public two-year institution of higher education are guaranteed to receive a minimum of 60 transfer credit hours and junior class standing upon enrolling at South Carolina State University – Orangeburg. All degree requirements, course prerequisites, minimum grades and credit requirements still apply. (South Carolina proviso 117.152)

Transfer Credit Evaluation

Upon acceptance to SC State University, each college transcript will be evaluated.

Please review the transfer credit guidelines below:

  • A maximum of 64 semester hours of transfer work from regionally accredited community colleges may apply toward graduation requirements at SCSU.
  • For an individual course to be considered as transfer credit, a grade of “C” or better must be attained.
  • No credit is awarded for developmental courses. It is important to note that even though a course may be acceptable as a transfer course, it may not be applicable to a specific SC State University major, program, or degree.

University Admissions

Readmitted Students

Once a Bulldog, always a Bulldog! We are eager to have you return to SC State University to complete your degree. Once you have completed your online undergraduate application for readmission, please allow seven to ten business days for application processing time.

An application should be submitted by any former student whose attendance at SC State University has been interrupted for one semester or longer. Summer sessions do not constitute major semesters. Readmission to the University and to the program of study in which the student was previously enrolled is not automatic. The student is admitted to the university based on the status they left in.

Admissions Checklist

  • Complete an application.
  • Submit final official transcripts from all colleges attended since last enrollment at SC State University.
  • Submit a final official high school transcript (if not previously submitted).

There is no application fee required for readmission. For a former student to be reviewed for readmission, any indebtedness to the University must be settled.

Applying after a Suspension

A student wishing to return to the University after having served their term of suspension must be approved to return by the Admissions Committee. For your information to be reviewed, you must:

  • Complete a new Application for Admission.
  • Complete the Appeal for Readmissions Program.
  • Request a meeting with your advisor or the department chairperson to discuss academic goals, your class schedule upon return and have them sign the appeal form.
  • Request that the advisor write a statement in your favor.
  • Submit a personal statement explaining the circumstances of the suspension and what measures have been taken to correct this in the future.
  • Meet with the dean of your department to sign off on your return to SCSU.

Your entire appeal packet should be submitted to the Office of Admissions. The Admissions Committee meets at least once during each month of the year to review appeals. If you have any questions, please contact the SC State University at admissions@scsu.edu (803) 536-7186.

University Admissions

International Students

SC State University welcomes the applications of qualified students who are not citizens of the United States. Such students may be admitted to SC State University under the following regulations in addition to the general admission requirements which all applicants must fulfill:

Exchange Students

Students who do not wish to earn a degree from SC State but only wish to study for a shorter term (a semester or one year) will have to submit everything from the degree seeking section except for the SAT/ACT section.

Degree Seeking Students

A degree seeking student is a student that wishes to attend SC State University and remain until all degree requirements are met to obtain a diploma from the university.

An Undergraduate Application or Graduate Application; SC State University prefers its students to apply online, however, if you would like to submit a paper application, download the International Admissions Application (PDF) and mail it to SC State University Office of Admissions.

First-Year International Admission Requirements

To apply, applicants must submit ALL documents before their application is considered complete and ready for review.

  • Proof of English proficiency: If English is not your first language, you will need to submit proof of English skills. We accept a variety of different scores:
    • TOEFL PBT: 500
    • TEOFL iBT: 61
    • IELTS: 5.5
    • Pearson: 44
    • Duolingo: 85

  • Official Transcripts (Graduate of a foreign/non-U.S. High School): Applicants who attended high schools outside of the United States must have their transcripts evaluated via International Credential Evaluations (InCred) or another globally approved transcript evaluation service. World Education Services.
  • Official Transcripts (Graduate of a U.S. High School): Applicants who have attended high school in the United States must submit official copies of their high school transcripts. Transcripts must be sent directly from the applicant’s high school through a secure online service such as Parchment/Naviance, National Student Clearinghouse or eScript, or via mail in a sealed envelope to:

  • Official record of ACT/SAT scores: ACT or SAT scores are required for SCSU course placement. Applicants can have their test scores sent directly to SCSU from ACT or the College Board (SAT) when you register for the test.

  • Certificate of Finance: According to U.S. government regulations, applicants must demonstrate they have sufficient funds to pay for tuition costs and living expenses for at least 1 year at SCSU. Applicants living off-campus will need to provide their monthly rental amounts. To meet this requirement, applicants must submit a bank statement, certificate of deposit, scholarship award letter, or a combination of the three. **An Affidavit of Support needs to be attached to any statement that is not in the applicant’s name. Please note that both the Affidavit of Support and any necessary financial statements must be translated into English.**

 

  • Copy of Passport ID Page: A clear photocopy of your passport should be submitted directly to the Office of Admissions at admissions@scsu.edu

 

  • Health Forms: These forms should be submitted directly to Brooks Health Center.

Congratulations and Welcome to Bulldog Nation!

It’s time to complete the steps below, which are required to finalize your enrollment. Once you complete these steps, you have officially completed acceptance of the offer of admission.

Step 1: Pay Your Enrollment Deposit
Your $160 enrollment deposit is required to secure your spot in the incoming class. Please note that the Office of Undergraduate Admissions is monitoring the class size and reserves the right to wait list a student at any time as the class reaches capacity. Hence, it is encouraged that you pay your enrollment deposit as soon as possible.
Step 2: Financial Assistance

  • Apply for Financial Aid at fafsa.ed.gov (SCSU Code 003446)
  • Review financial aid awards letter and accept awards
  • Electronically transfer your Tax Information using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool
  • Apply for SCSU Scholarships online at www.scsu.edu/apps. You must be an admitted student to apply

Step 4: Apply for On-Campus Housing

  • Visit Housing.
  • First-year students who are admitted and complete their housing application by June 15 are selected for priority housing. Contact Office of Residential Life and Housing for more information at (803) 516-4792

Step 5: Immunization

Students enrolled in four or more credit hours must submit proof of immunizations by the first day of class.

  • Pay your bill or set-up a payment plan using your SCSU student portal
  • Move-in (Residential)/Check-in (Non-Residential) in August 2022
  • Attend Freshman Welcome Week Activities
