Dr. John McMillan
Class of 2012
The Lexington-Richland School District Five has announced that Dr. John McMillan will
be the new director of adult education.
McMillan, who serves as an assistant principal at Dutch Fork High School, brings a
wealth of experience to his new role.Prior to his tenure at Dutch Fork, he served
as an assistant administrator at Irmo High School and has also held positions as an
adult education teacher and an English teacher. His extensive background in both secondary
and adult education equips him with a unique perspective and the necessary skills
to lead the adult education program.
McMillan’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication
from Jackson State University, a Master’s degree in English Education from South Carolina
State University, and a Doctor of Education in Education Administration from South
Carolina State University, which he received in 2012.
He is recognized for his excellence in education, having received numerous awards
including Lexington-Richland School District Five’s Assistant Principal of the Year
and a Presidential Award for Services Outside of the Classroom. These accolades highlight
his dedication to educational leadership and his commitment to fostering a positive
learning environment.
Michael Hawthorne Jr.
Class of 2006
Michael Hawthorne Jr. an environmentalist and climate justice advocate. He co-founded
Klean Energy Kulture with hip-hop producer Corey Dennard (Mr. Hanky) to promote clean
energy in Black and Brown communities through music, events, and brand collaborations.
Hawthorne’s previous experience includes notable work on campaigns such as Barack
Obama’s 2008 presidential campaign, Al Gore’s Repower America initiative, Greenpeace,
and the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign.
He recently was interviewed about his work by Authority Magazine.
Dr. Edward Louis Hill Jr. has been selected to serve as interim president of Talladega
College following the recent resignation of former president Gregory J. Vincent.
Talladega College is a historically Black college in Talladega, Alabama. The college
enrolls about 830 undergraduate students and 70 graduate students. Black students
represent 84 percent of the undergraduate population.
Hill has extensive experience in K-12 and higher education, holding both academic
and administrative positions. Prior to his interim appointment, he served Talladega
College as associate provost and dean of life-long and professional development. Before
he joined the Talladega College community, he was an associate professor and dean
of the College of Education at Texas A&M University-Central Texas and Fort Valley
State University in Georgia.
In addition to his university appointments, Dr. Hill has experience in advisory and
public service positions. The University of Georgia System previously appointed him
to the President’s Diversity Commission, where he developed diversity programming
and policies for many of the system’s schools. He was also appointed by Governor Gregg
Abbott to the Texas State Board of Education Committee on Teacher Preparation and
Certification.
Hill is a graduate of Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he majored in early childhood
education. He holds a master of education degree in curriculum and instruction from
Columbia College in South Carolina and a doctorate in educational leadership from
South Carolina State University.
Nicholas A. Sherman
Class of 2000
Nicholas A Sherman recently authored his first educational technology article.
Sherman is employed with Richland School District 2 as a Technology & Learning Coach
and has over twenty years of experience as an educator.
He has been a passionate and vocal advocate of technology implementation in all aspects
of education.
Having obtained a bachelor’s degree in English education from South Carolina State
University, a master’s degree in educational technology from Lesley University, and
an Educational Specialist degree in educational technology Leadership from Webster
University, Sherman has made it his mission to be a continuously evolving repository
of information and resources as it relates to educational technology.
