Featured Online Student Q&A: Tyron Roberts
The Center for Online and Distance Education interviewed Mr. Tyron Roberts, who is a student in the online Ed.D. in Educational Administration program.
Q: Briefly share a little information about yourself.
Roberts: My name is Tyron Roberts, and I have been married 26 years to my wife Sonya Roberts. She is a native of Orangeburg, South Carolina, and a graduate of South Carolina State University. We are the parents of three children. I am employed by the DeKalb County School District, a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia, as a high school administrator. I have been an educator for nearly 30 years with work experiences in Youth Detention Centers, Upward Bound Programs, and the public school system.
I am proud to say that I have earned all of my college degrees from an HBCU. I earned my bachelor’s degree from Morehouse College, master’s degree from Clark-Atlanta University, education specialist from Albany State University, and I am currently a doctoral candidate at South Carolina State University. Each of these institutions have provided me with a wealth of experiences and knowledge that I will carry with me for a lifetime.
Q: What is the title of the online program in which you are enrolled at SC State?
Doctorate in Educational Administration (Ed.D).
Q; How did you find out about the online program?
Roberts: A fellow student informed me about the program. I reached out to Dr. Percy Mack, program director, who provided me with information to aid in my decision-making process. Dr. Mack has been a mentor to me as I navigate through my studies.
Q: What influenced your decision to enroll in the program at SC State?
Roberts: My decision to enroll in the program at SC State was twofold. First, my conversation with Dr. Percy Mack has been a guiding force in my educational journey. Secondly, I have deep ties to the SCSU family, which began with my marriage to a native of Orangeburg, SC.
Q: How will this program help you to achieve your career goals?
Roberts: The knowledge and experiences derived from this program will help me achieve my goal of becoming a Superintendent of a school system. Furthermore, a doctorate in educational administration will provide inroads into post-secondary educational opportunities.
Q: How has the online availability of the program helped you in terms of your personal life?
Roberts: The online availability of the program has allowed me to continue my work responsibilities here in Georgia while pursuing my studies at SC State. Furthermore, the online delivery of the program provides me with the flexibility I need to manage my family and home life.Q: What advice would you offer to others who are considering enrolling in the program?
Roberts: My advice to anyone considering enrolling in the online program at South Carolina State University is to just do it! The program is more than just an educational opportunity. With the guidance, leadership and care of the faculty and peers, the program feels more like a family experience. Additionally, I believe that anyone who enrolls in the program and fulfills the requirements will reap good rewards.
