ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina Board of Trustees on Thursday awarded a $4.2 million contract to Carbra Construction & Design to remodel the Kirkland W. Green Student Center.

The board’s vote was followed by a project kickoff celebration on the Student Plaza.

The state-funded project includes upgrades to lighting, HVAC, windows, doors, life safety, and all finishes, as well as a new facade on the plaza side of the center and a video board on the Geathers Street side.

The remodeling job is scheduled to commence next month with completion in January 2025.

President Alexander Conyers; Dr. Gerald Smalls, vice president for finance and administration; Board of Trustees Chairman Douglas Gantt; Betty Price of Carbra Construction & Design; Dr. Tamara Jeffries-Jackson, vice president for student affairs; and Karrington McClurkin, Miss SC State, provided remarks at the kickoff.

In a separate project that will follow the renovation, the state has allotted SC State an additional $20 million for a 30,000-square-foot upgrade to the center, giving the university 62,000 square feet of modern space specifically for student life activities.

The Student Center was erected in 1954.
