Meet Kelsey Whetstone, a new Clyburn Scholar at SC State University

As a first-year biology student at South Carolina State University, Kelsey Whetstone is striving toward a career in pediatric medicine. An Orangeburg resident, Whetstone is cozily familiar with SC State, having spent her pre-kindergarten years at SC State’s Childhood Development Learning Center and her K-8 years at Felton Laboratory School on campus before enrolling at the High School for Health Professions. Plus, her parents are Bulldog alumni, making her a legacy freshman.

SC State’s Marching 101 ready to electrify national audience at Pepsi Battle of the Bands

The pride of South Carolina State University — the renowned Marching 101 Band — will command national attention during Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday festivities in January. The Marching 101 will join five other HBCU bands in the Pepsi National Battle of the Bands in Boca Raton, Florida, on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026.

Meet Malcolm Salters, a new Clyburn Scholar at SC State University

Malcolm Salters wants to be a lawyer and a lawmaker, and he already has a leg up toward that goal via an internship with a state legislator’s law firm. And although he is in his first year of studies at South Carolina State University, he already has one college degree under his belt, thanks to a dual enrollment program between Kingstree High School and Williamsburg Technical College.
