Erik Martin

Erik Martin is men's basketball head coach at SC State. He approaches his role with enthusiasm and a strong sense of purpose, recognizing the opportunity to positively influence and shape the lives of young men. In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Martin actively engages with the community, particularly schools, providing his players the chance to serve as role models.  Believing that athletes are responsible for being positive influences, Martin encourages his players to embrace their role as role models both on and off the court. With his focus on bringing the energy back to "The Doghouse," the home court of SC State, he strives to create an electric atmosphere that fuels both the team and the fans.

Background

Martin joined SC State in 2022. With 15 years of experience at West Virginia University and a year at Kansas State, he brings great value to Bulldog Country.  Martin's dedication and hard work in college basketball have garnered recognition and accolades. In 2020, he was recognized by The Athletic as one of the top 25 college basketball assistants ready to lead their own program. In 2018, he was listed among The Athletic's 30 up-and-coming coaches to keep an eye on. Furthermore, in 2016, he was recognized by The Sporting News as one of the top three recruiting men's basketball coaches in the Big XII conference.  With his impressive track record and recognition within the basketball community, Martin is well-positioned to make a significant impact at SC State.

More About Coach Martin

Martin was raised in Southern California and left home at 17 to go to TCU. He stayed for two years, but it wasn't the right fit, so he came home to go to Santa Ana Junior college. The team went 35-2 and won the State Championship. Martin  won Silver, and Gold Medals playing for Team USA basketball.He is among the few hHead coaches who has played and coached in a Final Four (1992,2010).
