Dr. Maria A. James is currently acting chair pf the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences and academic coordinator for the Family and Consumer Sciences Business: Child Development Program.

Dr. James has been at SC State since 2012. Prior to coming to SC State, she was a primary etacher (2nd grade).


  • Thornwell School for the Arts and the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences teacher of the year.

Research Interests

Education, charter schools, educational administration & leadership, higher education, k-12 education, Montessori education, multicultural education, social-emotional learning, “teacherpreneuers,” community partnerships, educational law, childhood care, remote learning/virtual education, and African American studies child development.
