SC State to host Utility Investigation School for engineers, utility managers & others Aug. 5-9

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University’s College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Transportation (STEM-T) will host a Utility Investigation School (UIS) regarding underground infrastructure August 5-9, 2024.

The program has been designed for:

  • Engineers and surveyors and project managers providing deliverables that include results and depictions of utility investigations.
  • Consulting engineers, Employees of utility companies, state DOTs and local highway agencies, regulatory agencies, local governments, etc.
  • Design engineers for infrastructure projects with significant expected utility congestion

The UIS will consist of two options:

  • Two-Day Course, Aug. 5-6.
    • Theme: Risks of Existing Utilities in Infrastructure Projects and Their Management. Explore the various risks presented by utilities in infrastructure projects.
    • Learn how to apply the latest national engineering standards ASCE 38-22
    • Target audience: Project owners, managers, designers, and builders.
    • Earn 16 professional development hours.
  • Five-Day Course, Aug. 7-9
    • Theme: What Every Project Owner, Designer, and Constructor Needs to Know About Utilities on Their Projects – AND – Geophysics and Utility Investigation Tools.
    • Importance and application of subsurface utility investigations, including pipe and cable locators, ground penetrating radar (single and multi-channel), time-domain electromagnetics, magnetometers, elastic wave methods, and more.
    •  Target audience: Professionals and their teams engaged in the field of subsurface utility engineering.
    • Earn 40 professional development hours.

The 23rd UIS is organized by the Buried Asset Management Institute International (BAMI-I), Utility Engineering and Surveying Institute (UESI), and SC State’s James E. Clyburn University Transportation Center.
