Before Stephen Paul ever opened a research journal or stepped into a lab at South Carolina State University, he learned the human cost of poor road safety. Sixteen years ago, a car accident in Tanzania left his brother, Noel, with both legs broken and lasting pain, an impact Paul has never been able to forget.

SC State Concert Choir to present star-studded 'Messiah' performance on Nov. 19

The South Carolina State University Concert Choir will present its final performance of the 2025 season with the Christmas portion of Handel’s “Messiah.” The Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Johnnie J. Felder, will be joined by a quartet of outstanding soloists, a 20-piece orchestra, and guest conductor Christopher Leysath for Handel’s most celebrated work.

Meet Kelsey Whetstone, a new Clyburn Scholar at SC State University

As a first-year biology student at South Carolina State University, Kelsey Whetstone is striving toward a career in pediatric medicine. An Orangeburg resident, Whetstone is cozily familiar with SC State, having spent her pre-kindergarten years at SC State’s Childhood Development Learning Center and her K-8 years at Felton Laboratory School on campus before enrolling at the High School for Health Professions. Plus, her parents are Bulldog alumni, making her a legacy freshman.

Meet Malcolm Salters, a new Clyburn Scholar at SC State University

Malcolm Salters wants to be a lawyer and a lawmaker, and he already has a leg up toward that goal via an internship with a state legislator’s law firm. And although he is in his first year of studies at South Carolina State University, he already has one college degree under his belt, thanks to a dual enrollment program between Kingstree High School and Williamsburg Technical College.
