Message from the CBIS Dean

Welcome to the College of Business & information Systems!

Guah

Built on a foundation of excellence, the College of Business & Information Systems (CBIS) at SC State University is backed by AACSB International (the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business)—the only HBCU in the state to hold this prestigious business accreditation.

We offer Bachelor degrees in Business Management, Business Economics, Business Marketing, and Accounting, along with MBA (MBA-General, MBA-Agribusiness, MBA-Innovation & Entrepreneurship and MBA-Healthcare Management concentrations). Each of these degrees is designed to equip our students to apply their expertise not only for organizational success but for the common good of mankind. By cultivating an inclusive learning environment and stressing social responsibility, the CBIS empowers students to drive innovation and positive change, and prepares graduates to utilize their distinct skills in service to society.

Business being a vocation that gives order to the betterment of society, the CBIS embraces research with a distinctive commitment to rigorous and relevant education that provides immediate applicability and lasting value.

After our recently successful AACSB visit, the faculty and staff are looking forward to another exciting cycle of intellectual discovery, creativity, and the robust exchange of ideas. By constantly kindling curiosity, faculty will continue to ignite vital sparks to fuel new questions, inspire novel ideas and connections, or even nourish intellectual and personal growth amongst CBIS students. Our faculty members are thought leaders in their discipline, who combine rigorous applied research with extensive industry experience to support effectiveness in the classroom.

Central to the success of our students are hundreds of CBIS alumni, along with decades of leadership and experience-based knowledge faculty bring into the classroom. Our alumni excite the curiosity that drives discovery and innovation, through presentation in the Executive Speakers Series, BECT symposium and classroom guest speakers.

The CBIS is committed to educating business leaders who are ready to meet the challenges and rewards of running innovative and creative businesses/ institutions in the 21st century.  To do this, we follow certain principles that reflect our culture and aspirations:

  • Teaching not only the knowledge and skills for the major, but also the professionalism, customer-centric, and altruism that distinguish our graduatesah
  • Offering both excellent business education as well as extensive experiential learning.
  • Embracing state-of-the-art educational technology, such as blended learning and simulation, while preserving the age-old methods of face-to-face learning from experienced professors.
  • Emphasizing the teamwork and inter-disciplinary skills that are the hallmark of global business practice today;
  • Recognizing that new knowledge is accumulating at an amazing pace and teaching our students to prepare for lifelong learning and self-development.

As Dean of the CBIS, I am constantly inspired by our amazing students and committed faculty. I am extremely proud of the intrinsic tradition of providing theoretical, experiential-based business education that the CBIS has upheld since the twentieth century. Thank you for considering the CBIS as the place where you can be developed into the next generation of servant leaders – leaders who have the moral depth and intellectual intensity necessary to meet the challenges of a time of critical transition in our society.

I encourage you to explore our website, contact us with your questions and seriously consider advancing your education at the CBIS—the best part of the Bulldog Country.

Sincerely,

Dr. Matthew Waritay Guah
