Concert Choir: Beautiful voices of SC State
The South Carolina State University Concert Choir is the premier vocal ensemble of the university. Housed in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, it serves as a choral laboratory for music majors as well as majors of other disciplines of the University. Students with an emphasis in choral/voice and choral/piano in the Music Education and Music Industry majors must complete seven semesters of Concert Choir.
Choral students explore music of different eras, styles, and composers while, simultaneously, learning choral techniques that enable them to become effective choristers.
The Concert Choir, as a performance ensemble, serves the university, the local community of Orangeburg, the regional communities of South Carolina and beyond. The SC State Concert Choir is committed to providing choral students with vast outreach experiences that include performances at the regional, national, and international levels.
Eligibility for participation and how to join:
All enrolled, degree-seeking students may gain membership by auditioning with the Director. A series of sightreading and ear-training exercises will be used to assess each student's ability to read music. Reading is a plus, but not a requirement, as long as each student is a willing participant.
Time commitment required:
Once enrolled in the class, students will commit to 90-minute rehearsals four days a week.
Annual events that have choir involvement, including concerts:
The SCSU Concert Choir hosts a series of concerts each academic semester. In addition to on-campus concerts, the choir is often featured in solo and joint performances throughout the state in various churches, concert venues, and at music festivals throughout the Southeastern region of the US.
