South Carolina State University is amid a multi-million dollar construction program designed to bring campus facilities up to modern standards. Funded by state and federal sources, the projects are transforming the historic campus into a 21st century learning environment.
Contracors rececntly completed the first two initiatives -- the renovation and reopening of the Queens Villlage Student Apartments Complex and the renovtion of the Kirkland W.Green Student Center -- while others are in various stages of design and completion.
New Construction
New Academic Building
The $54.7 million academic building project will replace Turner Hall and house classrooms, labs and faculty offices in a 94,000-square-foot facility designed by Evoke Studios, the firm behind SC State’s Engineering and Computer Science Complex. New Residence Hall
South Carolina State University is constructing a new five-story, 100,000-square-foot
residence hall that will house more than 500 freshmen and expand on-campus living
capacity. Slated for construction next to Mitchell Hall, this new housing complex is expected
to open in fall 2027.

Student Center/Bulldog Commons
The university recently opened the newly renovated Kirkland W. Green Student Center including a modernized bowling alley. The $4.4 million remodeling job gave the facility a whole new look inside and outside. A separate $20 million expansion known as Bulldog Commons will add 40,000 square feet of student life space, including a new cafeteria and a new bookstore.Learn more about Bulldog Commons
New University Library
Using $30.3 million in state funding, SC State will replace the Miller F. Whittaker Library with a new facility near Davis Hall. The new library will be constructed on the site formerly occupied by Bradham and Manning Halls — former residence halls that were demolished to make way for future development.Learn more about the new library
New ROTC Facility
South Carolina State University is building a new 30,000-square-foot ROTC facility designed to prepare the next generation of military leaders. The modern, flexible complex will provide state-of-the-art spaces that support cadet training, leadership development and academic instruction.Learn more about the new ROTC facility
University Transportation Center
With approximately $11 million in federal funds and a $2.5 million state match, this research center is pending administrative approval. Construction is slated to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026.Renovations
Sojourner Truth Hall
A $25 million overhaul of the 14-story residence hall is underway. Because the building lacks a fire suppression system, only the lower floors had remained in use in recent years. The renovation will install a sprinkler system and make critical infrastructure upgrades, allowing upper floors to reopen and increasing housing capacity by fall 2026. Once fully renovated, Sojourner Truth Hall will return to its full capacity of 384 beds.
