ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University and its National Alumni Association (SCSUNAA) bested their fundraising goal for the “Ride with SC State” bus initiative.

Under the leadership of SC State President Alexander Conyers and SCSUNAA President Hank Allen, this joint initiative has raised $354,166.21, surpassing the initial goal of $300,000.

Launched in November 2023, the campaign was initiated to address the critical transportation challenges faced by the university due to reliance on an aging bus and to empower deserving students through scholarships.

The struggle with transportation had limited capacity, necessitating the rental of buses for university functions and reallocating financial resources from other important areas.

"Reaching and surpassing our fundraising goal with the help of 602 dedicated donors is a testament to the Bulldog spirit and the deep commitment of our alumni and supporters,” Conyers said. “This achievement not only addresses our immediate needs but also sets the stage for continued success and innovation at SC State University. I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support of our community."

The campaign aimed to acquire a state-of-the-art motor coach to address these immediate limitations, promise substantial cost savings, and ensure enhanced efficiency. This strategic investment aligns with the university’s commitment to redirect funds toward pivotal areas of growth and innovation.

Every additional dollar raised will be dedicated to scholarships that support the academic and professional growth of SC State students. These gifts will directly impact the Fall 2024 semester by providing essential resources and opportunities for them.

“This campaign's success showcases the powerful impact of our collective efforts," Allen said. "Our alumni have once again demonstrated their dedication to SC State and its mission. These contributions will significantly enhance the experiences and opportunities available to our students, ensuring they have the resources they need to excel."

Contributions from alumni classes:

  • Class of 1974: $50,000
  • Class of 1979: $42,949
  • Class of 1962: $25,000
  • Class of 1988: $25,000
  • Class of 1964: $9,550

“The overwhelming support for the ‘Ride with SC State’ Bus Campaign underscores the strength of our SC State family,” said Dr. John Lee, vice president for institutional advancement. “Together, we are making a lasting difference in the lives of our students and the future of our university. Thank you to all donors for every gift, no matter the size. Your generosity is truly transformative.”
