SC State First Lady’s Artificial Intelligence Forum set for Tuesday, March 25

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University will host the First Lady’s Artificial Intelligence Forum on Tuesday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to noon at the I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium.

Held in conjunction with Women’s History Month, the event will highlight the evolving nature of artificial intelligence (AI), including developments at SC State. AI and machine learning are advancing rapidly, offering versatile solutions that already are transforming industries.

SC State First Lady Agatha Youmans Conyers is coordinating the event with Dr. Sandra F.B. Glover, executive director of the university’s Office of Academic Outreach & Engagement.

The featured speaker will be Nadia Ihsan Omer, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science at SC State. The event also will include a panel discussion featuring SC State faculty members Dr. Jagruti Sahoo, an associate professor of computer science, and Joseph Onyeocha, an assistant professor of accounting.

About Nadia Ihsan Omer

Omer is a research assistant for SC State’s 1890 Research Program where she works with Sahoo and Dr. Young Kim on AI solutions for the field of agriculture. Her most recent work was on application of machine learning for soybean crop yield prediction.

With technical skills in Java and Python, Omer is passionate about applying AI and software engineering to solve current agricultural challenges. She actively engages in research presentations and is optimistic about AI’s growing role in shaping the future.

Omer’s academic excellence has earned her a place on the President’s List and induction into Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College. She won Best Student Oral Presentation at the BECT Symposium and led a winning team in the SCSU YBS (Young Beginning Small) Farmers Hackathon, receiving the USDA Challenger Coin for innovative problem-solving.

Beyond academics, Omer serves as the organizing secretary for the International Students Association and is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and the Environmental Action Club.

About First Lady Agatha Youmans Conyers

Conyers is a 1986 graduate of SC State, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. She also holds a master’s degree in human services from Liberty University. Her professional career includes serving as a senior manufacturing engineer, Freightliner Custom Chassis Corp, Gaffney, South Carolina; US Patent examiner, US Patent and Trademark Office, Alexandria, Virginia; liaison engineer, Department of the Navy, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and teacher, Department of Defense Schools, Fort Bragg, North Carolina.
