Anonymous donors commit more than $500,000 to support SC State University
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University has received more than $500,000 in new philanthropic commitments from three anonymous donors in support of The Power of SC State: A Capital Campaign to Elevate Excellence.
“These gifts affirm that our story matters,” said SC State President Alexander Conyers. “They represent faith in the future of SC State and our mission to prepare leaders who uplift communities and embody Bulldog tenacity. Whether it’s through academics, athletics, or the airwaves, these contributions will help us continue to change lives.”
The gifts include:
- $407,952.60 to The Power of SC State Capital Campaign, which supports scholarships, academic excellence, and athletics.
- $50,000 to strengthen WSSB 90.3 FM and ESPN Orangeburg (WPJK 1580 AM / 92.9 FM).
- $54,000 to enhance the SC State Annual Fund, which fuels scholarships, student success, and emerging university priorities.
“These anonymous donors have made a remarkable investment in the Power of SC State,” said Dr. John Michael Lee, Jr., vice president for university advancement. “Their generosity strengthens our ability to elevate excellence across every corner of campus—from the classroom and the playing field to the airwaves that keep our community informed and inspired.”
Launched in 2023, The Power of SC State Capital Campaign is the university’s first comprehensive fundraising effort in its 129-year history. The campaign seeks to raise resources that transform the student experience through investments in student scholarships, faculty and academic innovation, modern facilities, and athletic excellence, including enhancements to the Oliver C. Dawson Stadium, Endzone Facility, and the Champions Club.
The $50,000 gift to support WSSB 90.3 FM and ESPN Orangeburg will strengthen SC State’s broadcast operations, providing hands-on training opportunities for students, expanding community programming, and amplifying the university’s voice across the state. Together, WSSB and WPJK serve as vital platforms for education, public engagement, and Bulldog pride, reaching tens of thousands of listeners throughout the region.
The contributions arrive as SC State prepares to celebrate its 130th anniversary in 2026, marking more than a century of impact as South Carolina’s only public Historically Black College or University (HBCU).
