SC State Constitution Day event focuses on voter engagement, student activism

ORANGEBURG, S.C. — South Carolina State University will observe Constitution Day on Tuesday, Sept. 22, with a presentation by Michelle Brandt of The South Carolina Forum.

The event will begin at 4:30 p.m. in the Barbara A. Vaughan Recital Hall in the Fine Arts Building. Brandt is The South Carolina Forum's faith and young adult outreach director.

The South Carolina Forum is a new, nonpartisan civic engagement organization dedicated to bringing South Carolinians together to identify shared priorities, deliberate on solutions and champion citizen-driven legislation.

The organization strives for a South Carolina where citizen deliberation builds shared understanding and consensus across the political spectrum, encourages participation in the democratic process and promotes representative civic leadership.

As faith and young adult outreach director, Brandt plays a leading role in the organization and is committed to bringing youth into the political process.

“I am passionate about getting young people civically engaged and seeing more women, especially Black women, run for political office,” Brandt said.

Brandt’s Constitution Day talk will address voter engagement issues, student activism and the challenges facing youth today.

The event is free and open to the public. A question-and-answer session will follow Brandt’s presentation. Audience participation is encouraged. 

Constitution Day is a federally mandated annual event hosted by the Department of Social Sciences.
