South Carolina State University is committed to helping students in programs being phased out remain on track toward graduation. If you are enrolled in one of these programs, a teach-out plan will provide a pathway for you to complete your degree.
The affected programs are:
- Business Education
- Technology Education
- Dramatic Arts Education
- Professional Land Surveying
- Art Education
- Social Studies Education
- Middle-Level Education
- Mathematics
- Mechanical Engineering Technology
A teach-out is a plan that keeps the courses you need available until enrolled students complete the program. The program simply stops admitting new students. Your teach-out timeline will be confirmed during your individual advising appointment. FAQ- SCSU
What you need to know
Will my courses still be offered?
Yes. Many of these courses will continue because other degree programs and the core
curriculum need them. For example, SC State will continue teaching mathematics even
though the Mathematics degree is being deleted.
Does this change the value of my degree?
No. You will earn the same degree SC State has always awarded in your program.
Your options and support
Can I switch to a different major?
Yes, if you choose. Advisors will help you compare staying in your program with moving
to a related one. For example, Mechanical Engineering Technology students may consider
the full Mechanical Engineering degree, which offers a pathway toward professional
engineering licensure.
Will switching delay my graduation?
It depends on how your completed credits apply to the new program. Your advisor will
run a degree audit before you decide.
Will my financial aid or scholarships change?
Staying in your program on track should not affect your aid. If you change majors,
meet with Financial Aid first to check any effect on eligibility or time limits.
I’m in an education program. What about teacher certification?
Your advisor will explain how certification works for teach-out students, including
required coursework, clinical placements and exams.
What happens to my faculty and advisors?
SC State is working with faculty on the teach-out plans, and faculty will continue
to teach and advise students in these programs.
