ORANGEBURG, S.C. –  South Carolina State University freshman class made history on Thursday, Aug. 15, by becoming the first group of students to attend College Night at Skate 698.

This inaugural event, organized by First Year Experience (FYE), was well attended by first-year students excited to bond and create lasting memories in a fun and unique setting.

“This was such a great way to break the ice — literally and figuratively,” said Dr. Lisa Sparks, FYE’s executive director. “It’s awesome that our class was the first to experience college skate night. This event was part of our ongoing efforts to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for our freshmen students.”

“We wanted to do something different that would allow students to relax, have fun, and connect with one another, “said Ms. Naseema Moore, FYE’s assistant director.

“As the owner of SKATE 698, I was proud to see so many young people skating, vibing, and having good old-fashioned fun,” Tamikah McDuffie said.  “Fun and excitement filled the air as students skated, leaned on skate mates, played games, danced, and enjoyed the snack bar. Hats off to the FYE staff who planned the event and organized every detail, including security checks, waivers, transportation, and wristbands.”

“Students left the rink with smiles on their faces and new friendships in the making, marking the evening as a memorable milestone in their college experience,” said Ms. Shaunte Jones, FYE academic advisor.

Many students expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the event. D’Asia Dunbar, a freshman, said she is looking forward to attending again because of the fun and the new friends she met.

For the SC State Class of 2028, this Welcome Week event at the skating rink was a great way for students to glide into the new academic school year.
