SC State Honors College student selected for London internship focused on sustainable engineering research
Tristan Tyler Jackson will combine academic study with professional internship experience abroad.

Jackson, an SC State nuclear engineering major from Los Angeles, California, and a Presidential Scholar in the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College, has been selected for a competitive global study-abroad and internship experience
through the Council on International Educational Exchange Global Internship Program
in London, United Kingdom.
He will participate from Jan. 5 through March 28, combining part-time academic coursework with a professional internship.
A global classroom experience
Jackson’s tentative internship placement is with PlanetSmart, an innovative startup focused on developing 100% biodegradable, super-absorptive polymers used in baby diapers, feminine hygiene products and other essential goods. The company is also expanding its research into environmentally sustainable agricultural applications.
In his role, Jackson will support market research, data analytics and C-suite communications, contributing to strategic planning as the company explores new industries and global markets.
“This experience will allow me to broaden my worldviews while also gaining real-world, industry-level experience in the engineering sector,” Jackson said. “Being able to contribute to a company working toward a cleaner and more sustainable future is a remarkable opportunity.”
Honors College leaders praise achievement
Dr. William H. Whitaker Jr., dean of the Clyburn Honors College, said Jackson’s selection reflects the academic rigor and global focus of the program.
“Tristan’s selection reflects the level of excellence we cultivate in the Honors College,” Whitaker said. “His commitment to global leadership, academic distinction and service aligns perfectly with the mission of our program. We are immensely proud of him and excited to see the impact he will make abroad.”
Dr. Windy Stephenson, executive director of Academic and Scholarship Services, also praised Jackson’s achievement, noting the broader value of immersive international learning.
“Tristan embodies the promise and potential of our Presidential Scholars,” Stephenson said. “Opportunities like this expand our students’ horizons and prepare them to compete and lead on a global stage. His success is a testament to his dedication and to the transformative power of immersive learning.”
