SC State’s Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College welcomes 125 new scholars

The Honors College Induction was held Thursday, Feb. 27, in the SC State Fine Arts Auditorium.

The group includes students from 18 U.S. states and three other nations.

ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University recently inducted 125 outstanding student scholars into the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College.

This new cohort, which includes both incoming freshmen and continuing students accepted for the 2024-2025 academic year, marks a significant milestone in the Honors College’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and leadership development.

“The induction ceremony marks the beginning of an exciting academic journey for these exceptional students,” Dr. William Whitaker, the Honors College’s dean, said of the event held Thursday, Feb. 27, in the SC State Fine Arts Auditorium. “Our Honors College offers a rigorous and enriching experience that challenges students to think critically, lead boldly, and reach their highest potential.”

The Honors College provides an enhanced academic experience featuring specialized honors courses, one-on-one academic advising, cultural enrichment activities, and community service opportunities. The innovative curriculum is designed to cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and leadership abilities, effectively preparing students for graduate and professional studies as well as competitive career paths.

“We are dedicated to empowering our students with the tools and opportunities necessary for success,” said Dr. Windy Stephenson, the Honors College’s executive director. “Through personalized mentorship, academic support, and transformative experiences, we help shape future leaders who will make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.”

This year’s incoming class boasts remarkable achievements, including 17 Presidential Scholars and several students recognized as valedictorian and salutatorian at their respective high schools.

The inductees represent a diverse geographic range, hailing from Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia. Additionally, international students from Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, and New Zealand bring a global perspective that further enriches the academic community.

The Honors College continues to expand its opportunities through enhanced interdisciplinary research partnerships, networking events with corporate and academic leaders, and robust leadership development initiatives designed to prepare students for success beyond graduation.

“Our goal is to ensure that every student in the Honors College has access to life-changing experiences — whether through research opportunities, study abroad programs, or professional internships,” Whitaker said. “We are committed to developing scholars who will make meaningful contributions to their fields and communities.”
