ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University’s Health Equity Research Training Center (HERT-C) will conduct its inaugural Health Equity Conference on Friday, April 19, at the university’s I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium.

The event will be held in conjunction with SC State’s Center for COVID Health Information, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and AFLAC.

The conference will bring together health equity/disparity professionals, policymakers, community organizations, community leaders, advocates, and community members to address critical health equity issues and explore strategies for creating inclusive and equitable healthcare for all.

The theme of this year's conference, “Breaking Barriers: Empowering Communities for Health Equity,” is a crucial call to action. Through a series of keynote presentations, panel discussions, a community health resources/vendor fair, and networking opportunities, participants can engage in meaningful dialogue, share best practices, and collaborate on innovative solutions to promote health equity and address disparities in healthcare access and outcomes.

"We are thrilled to convene this important gathering of trailblazing leaders and change-makers who are dedicated to advancing health equity," said Dr. Ashley Knowell, co-director of the SC State Health Equity Research Training Center. “By bringing diverse perspectives and expertise together, we hope to catalyze actionable strategies and initiatives that will lead to positive and lasting change in our communities."

Key topics to be addressed at the conference include:

  • Identifying and addressing social determinants of health.
  • Promoting cultural competency and inclusivity in healthcare delivery.
  • Leveraging technology to improve access to healthcare services.
  • Breaking Barriers to reach the community.
  • Sharing successful community-driven initiatives.
  • Empowering communities to advocate for their health needs.

The conference will feature renowned speakers and experts in health equity, including Dr. Pernessa Seele, CEO of Balm in Gilead Inc.; Cheryl Emanuel, principal consultant of Global330 LLC; and a panel of esteemed guests from organizations across the state. In addition, attendees can engage in collaborative discussions on topics relevant to their areas of interest and expertise.
