SC State to close Tuesday for Election Day
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University will close for Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2024,
to allow students, faculty and staff to easily take part in the democratic process.
“Voting is a core privilege and responsibility afforded to Americans by the U.S. Constitution,”
President Alexander Conyers said. “We wish to remove any barriers that would make
voting more challenging for the campus community.
“Closing the campus will allow many students who are registered to vote in their home
districts to travel home to participate on Election Day,” Conyers said. “This also
will give our employees ample time to vote during what is sure to be a high turnout
on Tuesday.”
Classes will be canceled, and only essential employees will be required to report
to work. Meal service for students will be provided on the schedule used during weekends.
The university’s closure is in accordance with South Carolina Code of Laws:: Title
59-Education:: Chapter 1 – General Provisions:: Section 59-1-370. Closing of educational
institutions on general election day.
“We encourage all registered voters to exercise the right to vote on Tuesday if they
have not already taken part in early voting,” Conyers said. “National, state and local
elections are far too important to our way of life for Americans to sit on the sidelines.
Your vote is your voice.”
SC State will resume normal operations on Wednesdaoy, Nov. 6.
