ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College at South Carolina State University recently demonstrated its commitment to service and leadership through a donation of nonperishable food and toys to the Samaritan House in Orangeburg.

This initiative included contributions of canned goods, bottled water, toys and games, which showcased the scholars’ dedication to supporting their community.

"The scholars went above and beyond, giving from the heart to support our local community," said Dr. Windy Stephenson, the Honors College’s executive director. "Their actions exemplify the true essence of our college: service, leadership, and academic excellence. Many students participated even after meeting their required community service hours for scholarships, demonstrating their genuine dedication to helping others."

The effort was led by the Honors College Student Council for the 2024-2025 academic year:

  • Victoria Jordan, president.
  • Tia Green, vice president.
  • Alexis Day, community service chair.
  • Amarie Gist, communications chair.
  • Kenard Holmes, Mr. Honors College.
  • Rejoice Anaele, Miss Honors College
    .

The Samaritan House staff warmly welcomed the scholars and expressed gratitude for their contributions. The donations will directly benefit families in need during the holiday season, a time when community support is especially critical.

"This wasn’t just about meeting a requirement; it was about making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most,” Jordan said. “I’m inspired by the collective spirit of our scholars and their dedication to giving back."

Dr. William Whitaker, the Honors College’s dean, emphasized the importance of service.

"This initiative reflects the core values of our Honors College — building compassionate leaders who serve with integrity,” Whitaker said. “I am incredibly proud of our scholars for their selflessness and commitment to creating a positive impact in the community."

Holmes said service is more than an obligation -- it’s a privilege.

“Being able to give back to the community that supports us is a humbling experience, and I’m proud to represent a college that prioritizes service,” Holmes said.

For Gist, the project was a reminder of the importance of unity and compassion.

“Small acts of kindness, like these donations, can create lasting change in our community,” Gist said.

The Honors College remains steadfast in its mission to serve the Orangeburg community and beyond. Through initiatives like this, the scholars continue to honor the vision of the late Dr. Emily England Clyburn, whose legacy inspires them to lead with purpose, compassion, and a commitment to service.
