Inaugural Juneteenth golf tournament to support Civil Rights Museum at Railroad Corner redevelopment
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – The South Carolina Civil Rights Museum will host its inaugural Juneteenth Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 21, 2025, at Hillcrest Golf Club in Orangeburg.
The event will raise funds to support the museum’s operations and continued development as part of the City of Orangeburg’s Railroad Corner revitalization.
The museum is a central feature of the Railroad Corner project, a major redevelopment effort connecting downtown Orangeburg to the campuses of South Carolina State University and Claflin University. Set to open in 2025, the museum will help preserve and share the untold stories of African American life and the civil rights movement in South Carolina.
South Carolina State University is closely tied to both the museum and the tournament. Hillcrest Golf Club, where the tournament will take place, is located on university-owned land leased to the City of Orangeburg.
The university’s contributions to civil rights are featured in the museum’s collection. Chief among them is the Orangeburg Massacre, the tragic 1968 police shooting of three SC State students during a protest against racial segregation. The museum will house photographs, documents and artifacts chronicling this and other pivotal events involving SC State students and alumni.
Proceeds from the tournament will support the museum’s mission to identify, interpret, preserve and present key historical materials related to African American struggles and achievements in South Carolina. Participants will compete for the Vanguard Trophy, which will be engraved with the winners’ names and displayed in the museum. Raffles and prizes will also be part of the day’s events.
Opportunities for involvement include:
· Two- or four-member team registration: \$150 per person
· Hole sponsorship: $150 per hole
· Meal sponsorship packages
