AKA members donate to SC State Athletics as MLK Day of Service project
ORANGEBURG, S.C. – Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.’s Beta Sigma Chapter at South Carolina State University joined Orangeburg-based AKA graduate organization Beta Zeta Omega Chapter on Monday for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
The initiative included collecting Gatorade, bottled water and snacks to serve the SC State Department of Athletics’ Fueling Station.
"Our athletes work tirelessly. They must know how much we appreciate their hard work and Bulldog Tenacity,” said Dr. Sandra F. B. Glover, SC State’s executive director of academic outreach & engagement. “The organizations collectively took the time to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through selfless acts of service.”
Glover said she found it necessary to respond to King’s call when he said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is ‘What are you doing for others?’”
Alongside Glover, who served as MLK Day of Service chairperson for Beta Zeta Omega Chapter, the effort was led by Beta Sigma Chapter President Sierra Cournell and Beta Sigma Chapter Vice President Maliyah Taylor.
Glover emphasized the importance of service throughout the community. She said this marked the second year that the AKA chapters supported SC State. The chapters also supported Claflin University, and the Tiffany Grant Foundation.
