SC State University professors elected to South Carolina Sociological Association leadership positions
Dr. Alison Mc Letchie is the association’s new president, while Dr. Heather Shay is the association’s new secretary.
The association’s goals are to “promote the teaching, research, and practice of sociology throughout the state of South Carolina.” In addition to an annual meeting that includes presentations by academics and practitioners, the association also sponsors the Carolina Undergraduate Social Science Symposium.
Mc Letchie and Shay have both served the association in other roles and presented their research at the annual meetings.
The proposed site for next year’s meeting is SC State. Over 30 attendees from throughout the South Carolina are expected to attend alongside colleagues from North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Other members of the association’s Executive Committee are Dr. Lisa Eargle, Francis Marion University, president-elect; Dr. Danille Lewis, Newberry College, treasurer; Drs. Jessica Burke and Jessica Doucet, both of Francis Marion; and Dr. Geniece Monde, Furman University. Dr. Mitch Mackinem, Wingate University, is the association’s past president.
Mc Letchie is a Class of 2000 alumna of SC State with a Bachelor of Science in psychology. She went on to earn a Master of Arts in anthropology in 2003, a certificate in museum management in 2003 and a Ph.D. in sociology in 2013, all from the University of South Carolina. Her research interests include religion, immigrant experiences, music, and Caribbean Carnivals.
Shay earned a dual undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology from the University of Kentucky, a Master of Arts in sociology from Florida Atlantic University and a Ph. D. in sociology from North Carolina State University. Her research interests include gaming, identity construction, gender, and sexual orientation in movies and video games.
