SC State offers free tax preparation to public on Saturdays through VITA program

The SC State VITA site will operate on the third floor of Belcher Hall in the FIN TECH Computer Lab. Services will be available on Saturdays from Feb. 7 through April 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All services are provided at no cost to the public.
The VITA program is a nationally recognized initiative of the Internal Revenue Service that provides free, reliable tax preparation services to individuals and families with low-to-moderate incomes, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and other underserved populations. Through the program, SC State continues its mission of service and community engagement while helping residents meet tax filing obligations and maximize eligible credits and refunds.
The College of Business and Information Systems supports the program by providing trained student volunteers under the supervision of Dr. Terrance Segars, assistant professor of accounting, and other faculty members. Students gain hands-on experience by applying classroom instruction to real-world tax situations while meeting IRS certification requirements.
Participants are asked to bring:
- A valid government-issued photo ID
- Social Security cards or ITIN documentation for themselves and all dependents
- Wage and income statements, including Forms W-2 and 1099
- A 2024 tax return, if available
- Documentation related to deductions or credits, including education expenses, childcare costs or health insurance information
- The university encourages residents of Orangeburg and surrounding communities to take
advantage of the service, which promotes financial well-being while preparing students
to become skilled, service-oriented professionals.
