ORANGEBURG, S.C. – South Carolina State University senior Soriya Littlejohn recently received the 2025 Outstanding Student Award from the South Carolina Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (SCAFCS).

This honor recognized her exceptional academic achievements, leadership, and dedication to improving the quality of life for individuals, families, and the community.

“Soriya Littlejohn is a shining example of resilience, ambition, and commitment to personal and community success,” said Dr. Maria A. James, chairperson of SC State’s Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. “We are proud to celebrate her achievements and look forward to seeing her continued impact in the field of child development and beyond.”

Hailing from Williamston, South Carolina, Littlejohn is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in family and consumer sciences business/child development. She has demonstrated commitment to academic excellence, maintaining a 3.719 GPA, and she has balanced rigorous academics, leadership roles, and meaningful community service.

"I have always had a passion for working with young children,” Littlejohn said of her career choice. “Understanding how children grow and learn allows me to make a real impact on their lives. After earning my degree, I plan to pursue my master's degree in social work in the fall while working as an early interventionist specialist."

As a distinguished scholar of the Clyburn Honors College, she has earned multiple Presidential Scholar recognitions and is a proud inductee of the Tri-Alpha Honor Society. Most recently, she was selected as a 2024 Ronald McNair Scholar, further solidifying her status as an academic trailblazer.

Beyond her studies, Littlejohn is engaged in various student organizations, including the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, the NAACP, the National Society of Leadership and Success, and Kinks and Curls.

She also serves as a student representative for the AgriFCS Academy, where she plays a pivotal role in recruiting and advocating for the Family and Consumer Sciences Department at statewide conferences and school districts. Her passion for service is evident through her volunteer work with Distinctive Learning and the Samaritan House.

Littlejohn was presented with the award at the SCAFCS Awards Banquet at the Springhill Suites Greenville Downtown on Feb. 19 in Greenville, South Carolina.

The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences is a unit of SC State’s College of Agriculture, Family & Consumer Sciences.
